In The Logic of Evil, William Brustein, a sociology professor at the University of Minnesota, offers an intriguing argument: the citizens of Germany who supported the Nazis were motivated by economic self-interest. He says the Nazis' popularity increased because of their "superlative success at fashioning economic programs that addressed the material needs of millions of Germans." Brustein provides impressive evidence to back his thesis; he and a research team went through the files of 42,000 Nazi party members and found a disproportionate number in occupations who benefited from the Nazis' economic programs. His is an argument that deserves serious merit, particularly given the blatant economic appeals some current leaders make to their constituencies.

Brustein (sociology, Univ. of Minnesota) uses 42,004 observations of members from the Nazi Party master file for this academic examination of the social origins of the party prior to 1933 and why members joined. Richard Hamilton's Who Voted for Hitler (Princeton Pr., 1982) and Thomas Childer's The Nazi Voter (Univ. of North Carolina, 1983) have examined why Germans voted for the Nazi Party, but Brustein's use of such a massive database brings out new interpretations that will cause some debate. In a reasoned narrative, Brustein notes that most Nazi followers were motivated chiefly by commonplace and rational factors rather than by Hitler's appeal or charisma. In other words, they voted their pocketbooks. Are the Germans of 1933 guilty of letting loose a great evil because they did not see the ramifications of thinking only of their pocketbooks, and should they have anticipated what was to come? Brustein answers no to both questions. His important book should be on the shelves of all academic libraries and all public libraries with a strong Holocaust collection.?Dennis L. Here he analyzes who joined the Nazi Party between 1925 and 1933 and why specific planks in the party's program might have appealed to particular segments of Germany's middle and working classes. Brustein challenges four common explanations of Nazi Party growth (irrationalist appeals, lower-middle-class reaction, political confessionalism, and catchall party of protest), based on the large sample (40,000) extracted in 1989 from the party master file in Berlin. Brustein reviews the positions of the Weimar period's competing political parties, then demonstrates that many of the groups whose interests best matched key Nazi positions were overrepresented among early party members. Brustein's utilitarian model may strike some readers as mechanical, and he takes Nazi Party programs more seriously than some other scholars, but the work offers enough new information to be appropriate for larger European history collections. Obstetrics and Gynecology: A History and Iconography is the third revised edition of Iconographia Gyniatrica, a comprehensive attempt to tell the history of obstetrics and gynecology through pictures. With more than 1000 illustrations on female anatomy, embryology, midwifery, labor, cesarean delivery, obstetrical instruments, breast-feeding, contraception, and obstetric and gynecologic books, it provides a spectacular report on the medical history of obstetrics and gynecology that could hardly be told just verbally. Every page of this book has something interesting to say and to show. (Figure) Obstetrics in its broadest sense encompasses the entire life cycle, from the creation of a new person to his or her birth. Today the diagnosis of pregnancy is simple and straightforward. However, this was not always the case, as shown in chapter 2: "If the veins within her arm beat against thy hand, thou shalt say: she is pregnant (Brugsh Papyrus, 1350 B.C.)." We travel in time from this Egyptian method of pregnancy diagnosis to the medieval introduction of uroscopy, to the 19th-century French usage of a test called the Kyesteine pellicle, and to the method, announced in 1928, devised by Aschheim and Zondek. Until the 19th century, medicine was divided into three parts -- medicine, surgery, and obstetrics -- with obstetrics being perhaps the oldest branch. That is why it is not surprising to find representations of birth in the crude cave drawings of the ice age (chapter 4). The illustrations of scenes of birth from various nations throughout the centuries are perhaps the most impressive part of the book. Many ancient myths and legends are associated with obstetrics and gynecology. The birth of many heroes and gods are related to the "unnatural" form of birth by cesarean section. This is because the outcome of cesarean section was so poor in ancient and medieval times that if a newborn sustained the operation, it was believed that the gods must have intended an outstanding future for this person. Some examples of such persons in the book are Asclepius (the Greek god of medicine), Julius Caesar, Buddha, Adonis (a Greek hero), and Rustan (a legendary Persian hero). In chapter 11, there are stories and reproductions of many miniatures, woodcuts, reliefs, and paintings depicting these events. Deviations from normal human forms at birth intrigued scientists, artists, and ordinary people for centuries. In chapter 14, there are stories about and illustrations of cyclopia (one eye), sympodia (fusion of the lower limbs), janiceps (conjoined faces), acormia (a head without a trunk), phocomelia (absence of the proximal segments of the limbs), and other birth defects. Many fascinating ancient and historical gynecologic instruments are presented in chapter 17. It is humbling to discover that many of the procedures and instruments that we believe to have been invented in recent decades were actually described centuries ago. In the 1967 edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica, under the history of medicine and surgery, is this description: "The history of medicine is not a branch of medicine; it is medicine itself. Here is no mere antiquarian pursuit or hobby for elderly or retired doctors. Medical history . . . and its study enables one to recapture in some degree the broad outlook of the early days, when a physician was also a philosopher [, and] . . . reinstate the patient to the position he ought to hold; i.e., that of the central figure. Thus, properly viewed, the history of medicine becomes the very basis of medical education." I sincerely believe that this is precisely why Obstetrics and Gynecology should find its place on the shelf of every modern obstetrician and gynecologist, as well as with anyone interested in the medical or cultural history of women's health. Collins dislikes being called a hero, so I won't call him my hero. I will say that I have admired him since his Gemini X days for his astronaut adventures, excellent writing style, and humor. This is a wonderful book because it is so descriptive that you will feel as if you've journeyed to the moon and back with Collins. I would give the book 10 stars if that was possible. Fantastic. Wonderful. Educational. Humorous. Triumphant. How many of these adjectives will you use after reading this book? All these, and at least a hundred more, it's that good.

After reading Collins’ fantastic book “Carrying The Fire,” I wanted to learn more and read this. Beautiful writing, I’ve read over 30 books on the Apollo program and these two stand above the rest for me. Highly recommended

Not a very detailed account of his flight. Only a few nuggets that were interesting. I would have liked a little more detail on the trip and his personal interactions with his crew during the flight too and from the moon on this historical journey.

Astronaut Michael Collins' last flight was in 1969 and this remains a GREAT book for a youngster interested in space travel.

This is a good background on Mike Collins. It is not as detailed as”Carrying the Fire,” but is still a good read.

Excellent read if you have any curiosity into the thoughts and adventures of being an astronaut.Upon reading the book and meeting Mr Collins, I am even more impressed and amazed at what our space program has done and continues to do with extraordinary people who are the Louis and Clark's of my lifetime.

Her sources were everywhere: in the departments of Treasury and Commerce, in New Deal agencies, in the top-secret OSS (the precursor to the CIA), on congressional committees, even in the Oval Office.

When she defected in 1945 and told her story -- first to the FBI and then at a series of public hearings and trials -- she was catapulted to tabloid fame as the "Red Spy Queen," ushering in, almost single-handedly, the McCarthy Era. She was the government's star witness, the FBI's most important informer, and the darling of the Catholic anticommunist movement. Her disclosures and accusations put a halt to Russian spying for years and helped to set the tone of American postwar political life.

Kessler (The Happy Bottom Riding Club: The Life and Times of Pancho Barnes) gamely attempts to create a true-life romantic spy-thriller from the life of Elizabeth Bentley, who in 1945 confessed to being a Soviet spy, implicated Julius Rosenberg and many others and set America off on its journey through McCarthyism. Unfortunately, Kessler's attempt to draw tension and romance from Bentley's life fails amid a clutter of cameos, unexplored details and a superficial rendering of early Communist history in the U.S. Bentley is certainly an intriguing subject. A descendant of Puritans and educated at Vassar, she joined the Communist Party while a graduate student at Columbia in the Depression. She soon became a covert agent and fell in love with her KGB contact, Jacob Golos. When Golos died in her apartment and Bentley's position with the Russians deteriorated, she reached out to the FBI. Kessler is a fine writer, but her subjects just don't cooperate. Bentley's "romance" with the homely, secretive Golos is hardly romantic, and much early American Communist history is still obscured beneath the shroud of secrecy under which it operated. Finally, Bentley appears to have left little behind to aid in reliably reconstituting her life. Despite Kessler's best efforts, the result falls short as spy thriller, as biography and as history. 8 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW.
